Reception

In Reception there are two classes – Cherry and Birch. Mrs Cooper and Mrs Ryder are the Reception teachers and are supported by Miss Prothero and Mrs McDonough who are the Learning Support Assistants.

On this page, you will find information about our routines, policies and a few snapshots of our wonderful classrooms. Here at Huyton with Roby, our school day is 8:40am – 3:10pm.

In Reception, we will be following the EYFS curriculum which aims to develop the children’s knowledge and skills through high quality provision, learning inputs and experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

Reading in Reception

Children are allocated a day to have their book changed and should always have their books in school on this day. It is useful for them to bring their books to school each day as we will also read with the children as and when we can. Children will also receive a phonics reading book which needs to come back to school as soon as they have read it.

Reading plays an important role in developing your child’s communication and language skills. Regular reading with your child has astonishing benefits; It builds self-esteem, vocabulary, feeds imagination and even improves their sleeping pattern!

Homework in Reception

In Reception homework will vary from Maths, Phonics and a topic related talking homework.

Homework and support at home play an important role in helping Reception children build strong foundations. At this early stage, learning is most effective when it is short, practical, and playful, reinforcing what children are already exploring in school. Most importantly, positive encouragement and involvement from adults help children see learning as enjoyable. When home and school work together, children feel supported, confident, and ready to learn.

Snack in Reception

We have a variety of fruit to try each day in class. There is no charge for this. We also get to try different foods when we celebrate festivals and events throughout the year. Children may also bring in a small healthy snack each day e.g. a piece of fruit or cereal bar.

Children should have a labelled water bottle in class with them each day.  If there are any changes in dietary requirements, please make a member of the team know as soon as possible.

Learning outdoors in Reception

We spend lots of time learning outdoors in EYFS, whatever the weather! Outdoor learning can enhance education, mental health and wellbeing, nature connection, inclusion and curriculum learning for children. Please ensure your children is dressed appropriately for the different weather conditions and please provide labelled wellington boots for the children to wear and leave in school, but be warned and prepared, being outside is lots of fun so the children may come home dirty, especially during the winter!
